Need help in a crisis or have a loved one in need? The Veteran’s Crisis Hotline was created in 2007, with a grant funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This free hotline is targeted towards veterans, but is open to anyone, from family and friends to active duty members with suicide risks.
The Veteran’s Crisis Hotline is backed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, making it a safe option for those in need. Many hotline responders are veterans, so they know the journey and struggles many face, and all responders are trained to counsel veterans.
During the call, responders ask questions to find the location of the caller so they can send help, if needed. Callers decide how much (if any) personal information they want to share while speaking with the responder. After speaking with the caller, if help is not immediately needed, the trained responder can direct the caller to a health provider in their area.
This free hotline is a helpful opportunity to those struggling and in need of assistance. Over 200,000 veterans and 179,000 non-veterans have called, with over 20,000 people having been immediately rescued.
